Here we have a superb segmented black walnut shell snare drum from Primas Custom Drum's Barbary series.

Primas Drums are hand crafted here in the UK and we recently got the opportunity to meet builder Eddie Hodgkinson and hand select some snares for the shop. 13" snare drums are always popular here, when we got to try this one we knew it would be a drum our customers would like. This 13 x 6 Barbary Segmented offers up some really interesting sonic qualities and extends on the sound you would typically expect to hear from a 13" drum. We love that Primas spec these drums with a Die-Cast hoop, if you want to tune the drum up high the Die-Cast delivers an extremely pleasing rim shot without the typical over ring, press rolls and ghost notes are extremely articulate too. What we really liked and is a less typical 13" trait was listening to the drum in the middle tune register, again the die-cast controls the ring really well and allows for a punishing back beat style rim shot or a fat back beat tonal quality, we felt the voice of the Walnut shell really kicked in with bags of mid range warmth - if you want equal tone to cut, this snare is extremely even.

The Barbary series is available in Segmented or Stave options, Primas say that the Segmented version of any Barbary snare will have a Wetter sound when compared to the Stave equivalent and we absolutely agree. This drum certainly balances the attack and the tone, we think this would be a sound engineers dream!

In terms of build quality The Barbary is everything you would expect from a hand built custom product. The shell build, quality of materials, bearing edges, finish and hardware are all top flight. Every Primas snare comes with an in-depth Quality Control Record with a series of checks the drum must pass before it can leave the workshop.
