TAMA CRESTAR BOP OUTFIT, 4 PIECE DRUM KIT, PIANO WHITE LACQUER, CIRCA 1986, PRE-LOVED

1,999.00

Here we have an extremely rare Tama Crestar. It's rare for two reasons, firstly it's in fantastic Bop Sizes (the same spec Elvin Jones was using at the time) secondly Crestar was made for a very short period in 1986, the drums featured the same shell previously offered on the Superstar (when superstar was a high end model) for some reason in 1986 Tama tweaked the shell recipe and by 1987 a new birch kit with a slightly thinner shell was launched under the name Granstar.

This Crestar has had two professional owners, the first owner was actually a rather famous Tama Endorsee at the time. The kit did also come with an 11 x 10 tom, yes you read correctly the illusive Tama 11" wide tom. We think this would have been part of a bigger kit with deeper sizes, but somehow has stayed with this smaller set up. Because the 11" is smaller but deeper than the 12 x 8, we have chosen to offer it separately, but the next owner of this kit will be offered first refusal on that tom.

More About Crestar

Tama launched Crestar as the successor to the Superstar, like the superstar the drums are constructed from 9mm, eight ply Japanese Birch. Tama carefully selected the Birch which would be kept in climate controlled storage before being cross laminated and diagonally cut. Tama say this process created and perfectly rounded and weighted shell with zero imperfections. Once created Tama finished the interior with Two Coats of polyurethane for friction free air travel . The exterior finish was done using computer controlled machinery for a smooth coating as even as the drum shell itself.

The bearing edges on the Crestar are precision machined 90 degree angle with a greater ratio of the wood making contact with the drum head which Tama had found to increase resonance.

Condition wise it is obvious this kit has been kept in the studio for much of its life. There are a few chips on the front and back bass drum hoops, a chip on the side of the 12 x 8 tom. The bearing edges, interior finishing and exterior finishing are beautiful, there is a natural yellowing which has happened around the lugs because of the rubber gaskets but this is totally natural ageing of the drum set.
