Sakae is the Japanese drum builder who up until 2013 exclusively produced Yamaha's high end drums - something they had been doing since the 60's. In 2013 Yamaha and Sakae parted company and Sakae decided to go it alone making drums under their own name. For the first few years things appeared to be going well with scores of high profile drummers opting to play the drums and the quality of the product was as good as what had gone before. Unfortunately during 2017 it was announced that the company was in distress and operations were suspended.
At NAMM 2018 it was announced the Korg USA had bought the Sakae Trade Mark and there are now plans for a relaunch currently called the 'Osaka Heritage Project'. These drums will be produced in Taiwan and Korg have hired Sakae's lead designer to help them carefully reshape and rebuild the brand. The drums featured on this page are from the 2013 - 2017 period all built in the Osaka Japan factory.
