Here we have one of the most recorded drum kits of all time. The Recording Custom Series which some of us better know as the 9000 series that was originally launched by Yamaha in 1976. The Set we have here is from the later 80's and is a pre-YESS 'Made in Japan' set.
For anyone who's never heard a Recording Custom, the kit combines an exquisite, powerful, distinctive crisp sound quality with a range of groundbreaking innovations.
Recording custom is one of the most consistently and meticulously built drum kits in the world, you are guaranteed a great drum sound every time.
The music business is known for fast moving trends and preferences but the iconic Recording Custom, with its Japanese Hokkaido birch shells, constructed using Yamaha's innovative Air Seal System and Diagonal Seams, delivered a sound solution for the studio that has passed the test of time.
The Birch shells produce a low fundamental tone with crisp sound quality and short attack decay making them optimal for recording situations. Drummers such as Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl & Vinnie Colaiuta are just a select few of the names who have recorded ground breaking records with iconic drum sounds produced from this very same kit.
Yamaha's Air Seal System shells feature select birch wood cut in plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. This process ensures that every drum shell is in round and of uniform thickness while providing superior tone quality and durability.
The Recording Custom is instantly recognised due to its trademark high-tension lugs, 60-degree bearing edges and stunning Lacquer finishes. Precision-machined lug nuts provide noise-free control, due to their springless casing design.
Manufactured as genuine one-piece units, Yamaha's high-tension lugs established one of the principal trends in modern design during the 1980's, an era that the Recording Custom dominated.
These drum kits are still in high demand and very rarely come up from this era, this drum set is in very good condition. The shells are finished inside and outside with Yamaha's trade mark Cherry Wood finish.

PreLoved 6.5/10 condition: Typical age related signs of use on the bass drum hoops, chip on the side of the bass drum where the 10" tom has rubbed (see pics), the odd lacquer chip and surface marks around the back of the toms probably caused by snare rub, a few lacquer chips on the bass drum shell not down to the wood. Otherwise the chrome work is in excellent condition and all the bearing edges and shells are perfect. The kit sounds great, includes all required mounting hardware and is headed ready to go!
