Here we have one of the most recorded drum kits of all time This kit is a Recording Custom Series which some of us better know as the 9000 series that was originally launched by Yamaha in 1976. We were told by the previous owner that this kit previously belonged to session great Andy Gangadeen. The kit is all Pre-YESS dated between 1983 and 1987 and features 3 standard depth rack toms which are always in high demand.
For anyone who's never heard a Recording Custom, the kit combines an exquisite, powerful, distinctive crisp sound quality with a range of groundbreaking innovations.
Recording custom is one of the most consistently and meticulously built drum kits in the world, you are guaranteed a great drum sound every time.
The music business is known for fast moving trends and preferences but the iconic Recording Custom, with its Japanese Hokkaido birch shells, constructed using Yamaha's innovative Air Seal System and Diagonal Seams, delivered a sound solution for the studio that has passed the test of time.
The Birch shells produce a low fundamental tone with crisp sound quality and short attack decay making them optimal for recording situations. Drummers such as Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl & Vinnie Colaiuta are just a select few of the names who have recorded ground breaking records with iconic drum sounds produced from this very same kit.
Yamaha's Air Seal System shells feature select birch wood cut in plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. This process ensures that every drum shell is in round and of uniform thickness while providing superior tone quality and durability.
The Recording Custom is instantly recognised due to its trademark high-tension lugs and 60-degree bearing edges. Precision-machined lug nuts provide noise-free control, due to their springless casing design.
Manufactured as genuine one-piece units, Yamaha's high-tension lugs established one of the principal trends in modern design during the 1980's, an era that the Recording Custom dominated.
These drum kits are still in high demand and very rarely come up from this era and with some standard depth sizes. This drum set is in played condition, there are marks particularly on the bass drum hoops and quite a few marks on the 13 x 11 tom which we have pictured in detail. The shells are finished inside with Yamaha's trade mark Cherry Red finish, the 8,10,13,14 & 22 drums all have the standard 60 degree edges, the 12 x 8 is an RA coded drum that has the earlier 30 degree round over painted bearing edge which Yamaha stopped offering during 1983 in favour of the 60 edge. We've listened to the kit and feel it all sounds in context, the 12 x 8 has a slightly shorter note which is typical of that edge type. This is going to be an awesome kit for recording, it's not one for a collector but it is certainly one for a player! The bearing edges are all in great condition and everything on the kit is original and working.
